Hash a piece of text

Type or paste anything below. All four hashes update live. The same input always produces the same hash — change one letter and the whole thing changes.

Hash a file

Drop a file to get its SHA-256 and MD5 checksums — handy for checking a download hasn't been tampered with. The file is read on your device only. Maximum sensible size: 50 MB.

What is a hash, and what is it for?

A hash is a one-way mathematical fingerprint of some data. Feed in a word, a document or a whole file, and you get a fixed-length string of hex characters. Hashes are used to:

  • Verify downloads — publishers share the SHA-256 of a file; if your computed hash matches, the file is intact and untouched.
  • Detect changes — even a one-character edit produces a completely different hash.
  • Fingerprint data — deduplication, integrity checks and digital signatures all build on hashes.
⚠️ Honest security note: MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes — collisions can be manufactured, so they must never be used for passwords or protecting sensitive data. Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 where security matters. And a hash is not encryption: it is one-way, so a hash can never be "decrypted" back into the original — that is the whole point.
