Good to know about voices: the voices come from your own browser and device, not from us β€” so the list and quality vary from one device to another, and every visitor may see different voices. In most browsers the speech is generated on your device; depending on the voice you pick, your browser may generate the speech online instead (some desktop Chrome voices work this way).

How to use this reader

1

Add your text

Type, paste, or use the sample text button to load an example paragraph.

2

Pick a voice & pace

Choose from the voices your browser offers, then adjust the speed and pitch sliders to taste.

3

Press play & listen

Pause, resume or stop at any time. Long texts are read in sentence-sized chunks so playback doesn't cut out part-way through.

Why listen to your own writing?

Hearing a blog post read aloud is one of the fastest ways to catch clumsy sentences, missing words and punctuation problems that your eyes skim over. Many writers proofread with text to speech before publishing β€” if it sounds awkward spoken, it usually reads awkwardly too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download the speech as an MP3 or audio file?

No β€” and we'd rather be upfront about that than pretend otherwise. The browser's built-in speech feature can play audio out loud, but it gives web pages no way to save that audio as a file. If you need a downloadable voiceover file, you'll need a dedicated text-to-speech service instead.

Why are my voices different from someone else's?

Because the voices belong to your browser and operating system, not to this page. A Windows laptop, an iPhone and an Android phone each offer their own set, and installing extra voices in your system settings can add more here too.

Is my text sent anywhere?

This tool itself never uploads or stores your text. Most voices generate the speech right on your device; a few (notably some desktop Chrome voices) are generated online by the browser maker's servers, so whether text leaves your device depends on the voice you choose.

Why does it read long articles in chunks?

Some browsers cut off very long passages mid-sentence. To keep playback reliable, this reader quietly splits your text at sentence boundaries (about 200 characters at a time) and plays the pieces back to back, so the reading sounds continuous.

Which languages are supported?

Any language your device has a voice for. If a voice for your language is installed, it will appear in the voice list above with its language shown next to it.
